About Dawn Nelson

Dawn Nelson was born outside of Chicago in 1950.  She grew up in the mid-west; summers in Wisconsin and school years outside of Chicago. She went to Illinois Wesleyan University for art school and Lesley College for graduate school.

Following college, she moved to the Boston area, where she has remained.  She worked for 10 years as Art Therapist, and then as an Art Teacher, which she has been doing for about 20 years.  She has been an active participant in both her home community of Jamaica Plain and her school community of Weston.  She has been particularly active in the areas of developing art exhibitions and creating sets for plays.

Dawn was Artist-in-Residence at Weston Public Schools from 1989 to 1992, and has been actively exhibiting her own art work in the Boston area since 1990.  She has also been involved with Jamaica Plain Open Studios since it's inception in 1993.

"Family Stories"

Digital Photomontage by

Dawn Nelson

On New Year’s Eve of 2001 my Mom lost her four-year battle with lung cancer.  This body of work was done over the course of her illness.  All of the work has to do with my thoughts about my mom and our family.

When I was in art school I was taught not to make art that was too personal.  The thinking was that very personal work ran the risk of being too sentimental and of loosing its universal message.  At 50, and upon loosing my mom, I am so proud to be able to be extremely personal in my artwork.  If art cannot be personal, what can?

This digital photomontage series was created using Adobe Photoshop.  The images in them come from old family photos, scans of actual objects and handwriting, original photos and drawing, all of which I digitally alter, layer, and “stitch” together.

Memories are glimpses of recollections in my mind.  Sometimes my memories are clear, and at other times fuzzy.  Time and reality are blurred.  Stories told to me of people who came before me coupled with pictures of these people weave imagery in my mind. I find that digital media provides a perfect paintbrush to capture the elusiveness and specifics of these memory images.

These limited edition prints are signed and numbered by the artist. They are printed on archival paper using archival inks.

The image “We Say Goodbye” is not for sale.

All other prints are available for $150 each.
